Making the Most of Farmers Market Season
Farmers markets are a great way to eat with the seasons and meet the people who grow your food. A little planning helps you come home with exactly what you need.
Before you go
- Bring sturdy reusable bags and a cooler bag for warm days.
- Carry some small bills, even though many vendors take cards.
- Arrive early for the best choice, or late for end-of-day deals.
- Plan a few meals so you buy only what you will use.
Ask questions
Growers are happy to tell you how something was raised, how to cook an unfamiliar vegetable and what will be in season next week.
Store produce right
Remove the green tops from carrots, beets and radishes so the roots stay crisp. Keep leafy greens wrapped in a damp towel in the refrigerator, and leave tomatoes, onions and potatoes at room temperature.
Prep safely
Rinse produce under running water just before using it, not before storing. Use a separate cutting board for raw meat and for fruits and vegetables, and wash boards with hot, soapy water after each use.
